6 common symptoms of depression:
What is depression?
Depression is a common and debilitating mood disorder. More than just sadness in response to the struggles and setbacks of life, depression changes the way you think, feel and function in daily activities. It can interfere with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep and enjoy life. Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and lack of courage can be intense and relentless, with little or no relief.
While some people describe depression as "living in a black hole" or have a sense of imminent death, others feel lifeless, empty and apathetic. Men, in particular, may feel angry and restless. No matter how you experience depression, if left untreated, it can become a serious health condition. But it is important to remember that the feeling of helplessness and despair are symptoms of depression, not the reality of your situation. There are many powerful self-help steps you can take to improve your mood, overcome depression and regain your joie de vivre.
