17, 2016 – A third of patients in previous intensive care units (ICUs) have depression, a recent review finds. "It is very clear that ICU survivors have physical, cognitive and psychological problems that affect their reintegration into society, return to work and can take on previous roles in life," said Dr. Dale Needham, lead author of the study. Professor of Medicine Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. "Health care providers, family members and caregivers should pay attention to these symptoms and make sure they are not overlooked," Needham added. Two or three months after being discharged from the ICU, 29 percent of the patients had at least one mild depression.
