Sadness is a human emotion that all people feel at certain times in their lives.

Feeling sad is a natural reaction to situations that cause pain or emotional distress.

Like other emotions, sadness is temporary and fades with time.

That is the first difference between depression and being sad.

Depression is a mental illness, not an emotion!

It affects all aspects of someone's life. They have difficulty getting out of bed, that is if they get out of bed!

If you are sad, you may have some of these symptoms, but they will not last more than a week or two.

Some of these symptoms are signs of depression and not sadness, such as suicidal thoughts.

You are NOT depressed if your favorite sports team lost a game, you are sad.

You are NOT depressed if the store does not have your favorite drink, you are sad

Too many think and affirm that they are depressed when in reality they are sad.

There is a big difference between the two!

  1. Yes, I am depressed.
    I had a verifiable, "double depression".
    I suffer from Dysthymia, and a major depressive episode combined.
    Yes, I have been having them since 8yrs. old.
    Folk, as an adolescent and teen depression manifests as extreme irritability, anger & hostility.
    I was not a livid teen, I was severely depressed.

  2. I never thought about that before but I guess their is a difference between being depressed and being sad. You can be depressed but not sad in some cases.

I've been diagnosed with depression before but i skipped my appointment with the psychiatrist because i think i don't need one..but now, i can't even stop thinking about suicide..i can't sleep at night..i'm too tired at work and classes..i can't do anthing..i just want to curl in my bed for as long as i want

  4. I am more depressed I dream of feeling sadness sometimes in my depresive episodes. I Get completly numb. So Yeah I hate When people say just cheer up
