Jim Carrey – What It All Means | One Of The Most Eye Opening Speeches

"Despair is a necessary ingredient to learn something or create something Period If you're not desperate at some point, you're not interesting."

– Jim Carrey

This is one of the most powerful videos I've edited in Absolute Motivation. It is an incredibly motivating and inspiring video, but at the same time, the speech that Jim Carrey enters leaves you thinking deeply.

Jim Carrey – What It All Means | One Of The Most Eye Opening Speeches

    Comments 45

    1. Hey guys,

I just want to say that it's okay if you don't agree with what he is saying. Part of being an editor is about creating emotion for the viewer and so much of the other motivational channels is just around motivation and nothing deeper, this isn't a bad thing. I want to create videos that challenge your ideas, that make you question your paradigm and that will lead to more growth in your life.

Motivation is essential in life but motivation on its own kind of becomes like a drug or like going on a porn site to get an emotion rush and then going on about your day. This is the reason I try my best to focus on putting a mixture of philosophical content within the motivational stuff. It is all about balance.

I myself don't agree with everything Jim Carrey says or even does. And that's okay, we don't need to idolise him to see that some of the stuff he says has objective value. Try to keep an open mind. There is so much in this world that we don't know and that not even science can answer or religion so, instead of thinking we know everything lets become curious sponges and listen to all perspectives.

Thank you so much for the support of my work over the years, whatever value it has given to you and your lives have been instrumental vicariously to me.

I have chosen to find meaning in this and other creative ventures in my life.

    2. Whoa, I just learned TODAY that he was sick with depression!

Was his funnyman shtick just a front to hide his disease?

    3. Thank you for making this video… 🙂 I especially love How the Grinch Stole Christmas…. Keep up the good work!!! And at times if you have a tough day, remember to "Look at the evidence…" We have ups and downs, but you are a survivor… you made it this far… things will get better… You will never know the countless number of lives you're touching so positively!! 🙂

    4. The happiest man has nothing, till then we just loose our baggage as we get older and wiser, till eventually we welcome our end as a new beginning of true happiness

    5. jim can not face the damage he did to his girlfrend, and try to be this is that , but the botom line is that he hurt the people that is most near him

    6. His philosophy is philosophy of adavita Vedanta. I mean they are strikingly similar. I follow it too

    7. Cool, hey Jim, look into Catholic theology, your speaking of Catholicism without Jesus. Great work on philosophy. Keep making great movies and gives heaps of cash to the poor.

    8. So I had two experiences I asked the universe I really wanna talk only to Jim carry about it or I would love a interview I am living proof of you get what you want

    9. Don't you love all the modern day Platos and Socrates coming out of the wood work on these videos?

    10. That is one confused individual. Blanket assessments with no regard to true origin. Loud music is part of the snowjob, DON'T BUY IT. hollywood crap.

    11. It all means that my whole life has been a controlled simulated existence. Much like the movie The Truman Show. The pieces of shit controlling it constantly poke and prod, then if you react they do it more. They stalk your every move. They literally make it so that you can't get love, they want hate filled hearts, so they create them. They enjoy that. They enjoy creating that. How pathetic they are. Then when you realize that, on comes accusations of insanity. Extremely intelligent, extremely evil.

    12. jim spent his whole life playing a character and was lost. He did dmt or acid and realized he was alive for the first time. money did nothing to make him happy finding himself was worth all the money all the movies. He is jim

    13. Its easy to take jim carry as a joke because hes a comedian. Thats what we're used to when we hear his name. The fact that its HIM is making it very easy for media and the masses to discredit what he's trying to inform people of. I hope people really listen to what Jim is saying when it comes to truths he's trying tell on these shows while the hosts laugh as if he saying a joke

    14. Who is jim carrey he asks? A fucking hateful moron who paints pictures of people that look like jeffrey dahmer painted them. Yeah, this fucking moron is really someone to listen to for spiritual advice.

    15. Jesus matters Jim Carey & He ADORES YOU, call on Him & allow Him to fulfill your life & there you’ll find true happiness. GBY

    16. You can be who you are as long as you 100% trust yourself and live comfortably in yourself. As in not doing things you were raised to do or society expects from you. When you learn to let go of that…your free.

    17. Sorry but people really are brainwashed by all the nonsense they hear these days! This has been going on for too damn long! There are more important things in life that people are missing everyday and night!

    18. I deeply sympathize with Jim Carrey's situation. It is his situation that has come about due to the circumstances of his life. Most people don't have such extreme materialistic desires. They may want stuff but they also know that there's more to life than stuff. That's I think what Carrey is going through here; he has set false expectations that wealth and fame is the ultimate good life, and when he discovered otherwise, he fell into deep depression.

But now instead of reassessing and rearranging his priorities, which takes a high level of humility especially at a mid/late age, he seems to have completely given up. If he's not depressed anymore, it's because he's fallen out the bottom, not because he has pulled himself out of it. I won't judge him but I refuse to condone such an attitude. The worst part is that he's advocating this attitude on a general basis. These problems are specific to the very unique circumstances of his life, and he's not dealing with them well at all.

Ideas are not "just weather". They inform actions. Actions matter, therefore ideas matter. The things we think and feel and say and do matter. For a moral person, that emotional "satisfaction" that Carrey dismisses occurs when good, positive, beneficial things actually happen. It's an effect of the improvement of the world. The goal should always be to leave the world in a better place than we found it. The reason we get to live lives better than people who were alive 1000 years ago is because people have cared about ideas and thoughts and beliefs and words and actions, even if they're somewhat fleeting relative to the entirety of time, even if we're all gonna die someday and be forgotten soon afterward.

What happens after we die matters, and we can affect what happens after we die, therefore what we do while we're alive matters. Individual actions add up to a lot.

This video makes me sad, because Carrey's life has so much meaning and value just by his inducing so much laughter over the years. He shouldn't need to find deeper meaning than that. He has single-handedly improved the world in a very significant way and he should forever be proud of himself for that. The reason he is depressed seems to come from an extreme dependence on materialism for happiness. While that is a serious problem not just for him but for many others, it's not a general problem of humanity. And to those for whom it is a problem, it should be dealt with by figuring out what's really important in life and working toward that, not declaring that nothing is important and nothing matters like Carrey has essentially done.

    19. ahhhhh youtube. Make a platform nobody wants to pay money for and then flood it with shit nobody wants and then offer the way it was but if people want it, now they have to pay….. fuckers

    20. Hey dick knuckle how about you not make the background crap music so loud that I can't hear what the mans saying it takes you completely out of everything you're trying to understand and shows how unenviable e futile your attempt to make this more dramatic was

    21. ‘I believe that I had to become a famous idea, and get the all the stuff people dream about and accomplish a bunch of things that look like success in order in order to give up my attachment to those things’

‘It looks great when you’ve got cool car and you got nice clothes, and you’ve done something people admire… but it can never fulfil you, you can never be happy; it’s not where happiness comes from’

This hit me like a tonne of bricks

    22. I bellieve it was in Will Smith's "Pursuit of Happiness" of when he was down and out with his son living in homeless shelters…there was some point of how homeless shelters give out clothes, accommodation, food…I got a message somewhere in this brilliant movie that "people without lots of stuff-home, food, clothes-appreciate handouts yes…but PEOPLE NEED INSPIRATION" (SOMETHING TO GIVE THEM HOPE) MORE THAN THE HANDOUTS!!! Bravo Jim for your insight!

    23. 1 Timothy 4  Now THE SPIRIT speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which GOD hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of GOD is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of GOD and prayer. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of JESUS CHRIST, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but GODLINESS is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living GOD, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

    24. We know, deep down we know that whatever we achieve it's not gonna make us happy. Yet we still work so hard trying to get there. And when you finally do, you're still lonely!

    25. He's a narcissistic idiot. Only actors can ever be this self-indulgent and ego driven. There are no such thing as the Übermensch , people that try are just ego driven people like Deepak Copra. You can say all this philosophical common sense, but at the end of the day you are human, you drive back home and scream at people that cut you off etc. I've read philosophy books for most of my life, and they are great expand how you think about things, but that's it people that try to be enlightened are just that, 'trying' to be enlightened. To say you are enlightened is to say you're not human, just watch Deepak Chopra losing his shit all the time and trying his best to seem knowledgeable and intelligent that he just makes up shit using quantum mechanical phrases.

    26. What if you buried the real you and can no longer recognise who the real you is and have no clue what it is in life that you enjoy doing to make a career out of because you do not know what YOU really love anymore. Is there a road of recovery or do you simply start a clean slate and make something out of nothing?

    27. I love Jim Carey, liked some of his films etc..I especially liked the quote: I think everyone should be rich and famous so they can discover that it's not all that ,the key to one's happiness. ( Or something to that effect. My thought was, sounds like a great idea! Why don't the rich and famous spread the wealth to the rest of us then? Let us discover this truth for ourselves!
