While we all feel sad, moody or depressed from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes for no apparent reason. Depression is more than a low mood: it is a serious condition that has an impact on both physical and mental health.
Depression affects the way people think, feel and act. Depression makes it harder to handle day to day and interferes with study, work and relationships. A person may be depressed if for more than two weeks he has felt sad, depressed or miserable most of the time or has lost interest or pleasure in most of his usual activities, and has also experienced several of the signs and symptoms in the minus three of the categories listed below. It is important to keep in mind that we all experience some of these symptoms from time to time and it does not necessarily mean that a person is depressed.
